About Holladay Preschool

In 1954, Dr. Agnes Plenk, a member of the Holladay United Church of Christ, founded Holladay Preschool. It became a safe and nurturing environment where children could experience choice, exploration and discovery. More than 60 years later, Holladay Preschool remains dedicated to a developmentally-appropriate program, dedicated to learning through art, imagination, movement and play! Our teachers see the child as a whole person; a person with a mind, body, feelings and relationships that all need to be nurtured. Every preschool class shares these goals, as well as similar daily routines. However, each team of teachers determines their own day-to-day curriculum, art projects and activities. All of our teachers are passionate about sharing fun experiences with children. Hands-on learning is at the core of what we do in every classroom.

Each day at preschool, children participate in at least five main activities:

  • Rug time, where there is an assortment of activities each day that may include stories, singing, learning pre-reading or math skills, a science experiment or group games
  • Outside play time with other children
    • If it is too cold outside, the Big Room is provided where portable playground equipment is set up to resemble outdoor play
  • Free play in a creative and varied environment, where there are dress-ups, props for dramatic play, sensory tables, building toys, tactile experiences and unstructured art opportunities with children their own age
  • Art, music or sensory projects where children draw, cut, glue, write, build, feel, explore and imagine while creating, painting or trying something new with their peers
  • Snack time, where children learn to share, pour and interact socially

We also stay in touch with parents, and try to involve them, by:

  • Beginning the year with a "Back to School Night" for the entire family
  • Chatting at pick-up and drop-off time
  • Providing monthly calendars with classroom activities and information
  • Inviting parents to call teachers at any time to discuss concerns
  • Inviting parents to attend a parent-teacher conference in November, and any other time parents feel a one-on-one is needed (3 & 4 year olds)
  • Offering a parenting class for parents of our 2 year old students
  • Providing a spring description of the child's progress and strengths, either in written report, at the parent-teacher conference, or both (4 year olds)
